Groups Which Do Not Admit Ghosts

چکیده
A ghost in the stable module category of a group G is a map between representations of G that is invisible to Tate cohomology. We show that the only non-trivial finite p-groups whose stable module categories have no non-trivial ghosts are the cyclic groups C2 and C3. We compare this to the situation in the derived category of a commutative ring. We also determine for which groups G the second power of the Jacobson radical of kG is stably isomorphic to a suspension of k.

Warped product and quasi-Einstein metrics
Warped products provide a rich class of physically significant geometric objects. Warped product construction is an important method to produce a new metric with a base manifold and a fibre. We construct compact base manifolds with a positive scalar curvature which do not admit any non-trivial quasi-Einstein warped product, and non compact complete base manifolds which do not admit any non-triv...
متن کاملOn actions of discrete groups on nonpositively curved spaces
This note contains several observations concerning discrete groups of non-parabolic isometries of spaces of nonpositive curvature. We prove that (almost all) surface mapping class groups do not admit such actions; in particular, they do not act cocompactly. A new obstruction to the existence of a nonpositively curved metric on closed manifolds is presented. We give examples of 4-manifolds bered...
متن کاملClassification of finite groups that admit an oriented regular representation
This is the third, and last, of a series of papers dealing with oriented regular representations. Here we complete the classification of finite groups that admit an oriented regular representation (or ORR for short), and give a complete answer to a 1980 question of László Babai: “Which [finite] groups admit an oriented graph as a DRR?” It is easy to see and well-understood that generalised dihe...
متن کاملRicci Yang-mills Solitons on Nilpotent Lie Groups
The purpose of this paper is to introduce the Ricci Yang-Mills soliton equations on nilpotent Lie groups. In the 2-step nilpotent setting, we show that these equations are strictly weaker than the Ricci soliton equations. Using techniques from Geometric Invariant Theory, we develop a procedure to build many different kinds of Ricci Yang-Mills solitons. We finish this note by producing examples ...
متن کاملThe Birefringence of the Human Red Cell Ghosts
The type of birefringence described by Mitchison, which extends some 0.5 micro in from the surface of the human red cell ghost in glycerol and which shows a maximum retardation of about 7 A, is only found in ghosts which are sufficiently well hemoglobinised to be seen with the ordinary microscope. Ghosts from which all hemoglobin has been lost are not visible with the ordinary microscope and ar...
